IUPUI is Indiana's premier urban research university. The campus enrolls more than 30,000 students in 21 schools and academic units.
Update: Hazel graduated in May 2008 and began as a Bepko Fellow in Fall 08 in an MS in Biomedical Engineering.
Breaking new ground is old hat to Hazel Gomes. The School of Engineering & Technology graduate is on track to become the first in her family to become an engineer and the first to become a physician, thanks to her major in IUPUI's highly regarded biomedical engineering program. And for good measure, the native of Kuwait was the first international student selected as a Bepko Scholar.
As a freshman, Hazel spent a lot of time volunteering in IUPUI-based hospitals. The graduate of the British School of Kuwait carried IUPUI's colors in the annual Global Young Leaders Conference in New York City and Washington, D.C. She also is active in the IUPUI Honors Club, the Society of Women Engineers, the International Club and is the vice president of the campus's Study Abroad Club.
In her free time, Hazel plays both the piano and guitar, and enjoys such creative outlets as art, crafts and cooking. And she and her IUPUI friends indulge another of her newfound passions: living life in downtown Indianapolis.
