Service Learning

An energetic commitment to service

Living and studying in an urban environment means our scholars have unique chances to get involved and make a difference in the campus and community.

Honors scholars develop a civic mind through service events, courses, student organizations, and other opportunities. They create an environment that fosters and celebrates service.

Contact Kara Woodlee to learn how you can get involved in service learning opportunities.

Campus and community service events

Service events bring our campus together to make a difference in the city. Honors scholars participate in these events and more:

Volunteer opportunities

You can volunteer in a Day of Service, join a student service organization, participate in an Alternative Fall or Spring Break, or become a Sam H. Jones Community Service Scholar.

You also can volunteer with one of our community partners who are working to address specific social issues in the community.

Service learning courses

Service learning courses allow students to participate in organized service activities for course credit.

Students participate in activities that meet identified community needs, then reflect on the activities to gain further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of service, and an enhanced sense of personal values and civic responsibility.

Student service organizations

Student organizations offer some of the best ways to hone your leadership skills by getting involved in community service.

You can join the Honors College student service organization, Academics for Civic Engagement (ACE), which partners with organizations in the Indianapolis community to plan monthly volunteer opportunities. You also can engage with service organizations on the IUPUI campus at large.

RISE to the IUPUI challenge

When you RISE to the IUPUI Challenge, you're enhancing what happens in the classroom, then reflecting on what you learned. Honors Scholars receive academic credit by engaging on this level, and all RISE courses are documented on your transcript.

Each undergraduate student is challenged to include two of the four RISE experiences—research, international experience, service learning, and experiential learning—into their degree programs. We expect Honors Scholars to do them all.
